Partly copied & pasted here (where it actually belongs):
I used to watch the tv-series "Party Of Five" with Matthew Fox (tv-series: Lost), Neve Campbell (Scream-films) & Jennifer Love Hewitt (I Know What You Did Last Summer-films & Ghost Whisperer).
I've first heard this great ballad by Sammi! Tried & found the original! I thought for this great original I would give it a try! I liked Jennifer's acting! Finally got the CD & was surprised to find another original (Let's Go Bang = Jacky's 屈到病) on it! And later I bought Sandy's album & found another HK cover of In Another Life. According to xiami Sandy's album came out first (Jan 1996) & then Sammi's (Nov 1996)!
I prefer Sammi's version more (it's sadder/sticked to the original's mood)! And the first impression has helped! Sandy's version was more joy/happy! Jennifer's performance wasn't that bad at all! ;P
In order I like (pure my feeling for the song, Sandy's performance was of course great, but a bit too happy for me): Sammi/Jennifer/Sandy
So here's the post, finally!
PS: all 3 songs were a bit jerky, clicks & pops! Not sure whether the storage has something to do with it! I'll try to listen again!
the 1st version i heard for this song was by malaysian pop soul diva NING BAIZURA on her 1994 album NING. it was a huge hit in radio / tv station here. then i heard Sandy's version when her album come out in 1996...
like u said, the 1st impression is always the deeper. my vote goes to Ning Baizura, her vocal is soulful ...
Discowayne, if you have NING BAIZURA's version, I will be happy to add it on this post, so we can all listen and compare.
Album "Let's Go Bang" was from 1995 (recording 1994-1995) according to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let's_Go_Bang
Album "Ning" was from 1994 according to: http://zain2007.multiply.com/reviews
The song was from 1993 according to:

Download I found, here (unsure whether it was a rip from CD or else/if else please look further):

I'm clueless which was the original! Since this was the only English song on Ning' album! I still guess it was a cover!

I still prefer Jennifer's/Sammi's more (same record company Atlantic/Warner)! I guess Sandy's could be inspired by Ning (also a bit joy in it/both were not so sad).
Ning Baizura's version has been added. Thanks Griffin for finding it and Discowayne for the info.
From the evidence given thus far, it seems Ning's version was indeed earlier than Jennifer's. Unless Griffin you are able to find another version released in 1993, I would assume Ning's was the original for now.
@discowayne, thank you for the info's!

SONGS ON RECORDS (*single release)
Jennifer Love Hewitt-In Another Life (Atlantic)
Annie Haslam-In Another Life (Apollon)
Susan Duffy-" (ZTT)
Ning-" (Sony Malaysia)
I'm only guessing since there wasn't any note about this "! I think all 4 artists have recorded the same song while " indicates the title was unknown (in other language perhaps)! I couldn't find this Susan Duffy!
It doesn't matter which was the original! I still like Jen's+Sammi's! Great song!
And I still think JLH was the inspiration since HK artists tend to cover more songs from the same artist (Let's Go Bang/In Another Life)!
i have all NING albums. if u need a better version pls let me know...
'I'm clueless which was the original! Since this was the only English song on Ning' album! I still guess it was a cover!"
there is another english song titled 'SHARE MY DREAM' on that album. i think Sony Music intended to bring her to international market. she included at least one english song on almost all of her albums & a full ENGLISH only album titled ALWAYS finally released in 1997.
In 2001, she released another Japan only full english album NATURAL WOMAN & 2008 an International released full english album EAST TO WEST...
anyway, i still think NING is the original singer to this song ^^ (maybe i am wrong)
Listen to all four versions on a row, I think I prefer the english versions, despite I am big Sandy fan. Jennifer's version is a bit more emotional, while Ning's sounds softer and her voice is also very nice. Good song.
As a side note, kind of an announcement, some of you already know in fact, that I am going back to the US in October. Will be for working this time, at least for a couple years if not longer. So during this month and next, I may not be able to leave much comments on the posts. I have pre-uploaded thru the end of October though, for every Sunday and alternating Wednesday. I'll try to pre-post more thru the end of the year hopefully before I will depart from Hong Kong. It might be tough though, since there are so much to prepare for the move. Anyway, hope you guys will keep this blog going while I will be on and off from here. Thanks ahead. :)
Thanks for your reply in Javaws.com. By the way, do you have Dick Lee's "if I go" and "I Need You Back"?
因為留言頗長而我英文又唔係幾好,唔知有冇睇漏。上面有冇人提過林憶蓮自己都有個英文版?
都係叫做"In another life",收錄喺1996年"I Swear"英文碟。
@hopeyearn, no lah. I don't have Dick Lee's 「If I Go」or「I Want You Back」. For 「If I Go」, it is easier, cause I saw the album Singapop on Taobao before. But「I Want You Back」, it's hard, it is only available on vinyl.
@blacklab, yes, Sandy covered the english version as well. But her version was not the original.
Added Annie Haslam's Renaissance's version. Thanks to Griffin.
Blessing In Disguise was originally released by Renaissance (group in which Annie Haslam was the main vocalist)! The exact same album Blessing In Disguise was re-released only this time using her own name (Renaissance disbanded/she went solo)! Read it on the net somewhere!
But I believe 林憶蓮 - 有緣千里 was inspired by Annie Haslam (Renaissance) - In Another Life! The same intro!
And 鄭秀文 - 請放心 by Jennifer Love Hewitt - In Another Life! The same intro!
A completely different intro (sea+birds) in Ning Baizura - In Another Life! So this might be an original (not that it was specially written for her)! It was written already & by coincidence all record companies picked this song for their artists! So none of them was inspired by each other! So Ning's version wasn't the original to Sandy's/Sammi's cover! It was the same song which inspired Sandy's (by Annie's)/Sammi's (Jennifer's)! But I could be wrong! No matter what it's a very good song!
I think the original credit was really "Annie Haslam's Renaissance", kind of a cheesy name.
See notes part on here:

Also here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renaissance_%28band%29#Annie_Haslam.27s_Renaissance
You are right though Annie Haslam was originally the lead vocal for the band Renaissance. And then she released her solo project under the name Annie Haslam's Renaissance.
I've checked again: it is kind of stupid name (Annie Haslam's Renaissance).
I think I was misled by http://tw.mojim.com/tw103117x8.htm#4
Here was where I found Renaissance +In Another Life in the first place! From here I found the name Annie Haslam was in the related results...
