I believe this was how it went! George/Ah Lam must have heard Michael Bolton's version (released as a single & it reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1988)!

A great interpretation/
performance/cover: Michael added his own twist to this song! It's so much different from the original. But it's very enjoyable in his own way.
And he must have thought: hey, that's a great song. I know this one. It's still has the hit-potential after so long! Wow, lets cover it & see whether we can cash on it! But he clearly opted for the original recording to cover (Otis Redding's). The whistles at the outro/fade, not on Bolton's but on Otis'! So Sergio Mendes can be neglected!
Okay, about the song: Ah Lam did a excellent job here! Finally something in his league! I'm glad he didn't cover from Bolton's! Otherwise it would be another cover-diaster for George! He's not able to scream/yell as Bolton (Ah Lam's "pulling the the cow up in the tree")! He's that old-fashioned/"out" ;-p Yeah, I deserve some spanking with my harsh-comments again! ;-) George, I love your cover, did it help a little? NEXT COMMENT NOW ...
