First heard Vivian's on Polygram's Karaoke LD! Great song & found the original back then & contributed this finding in May 2010!
A great song! But I prefer the original more: great voice! Vivian's kind of missing something, don't know what! Perhaps I listened to Dina's just too often back then.

Just found out Dina's was a cover as well (Don’t Be A Stranger first recorded by Chyna Whyne)! It makes hers the inspiration! Hope you can find her version. I didn't ;(

One of the tracks on the album, "Don't Be a Stranger", a cover version of a song originally recorded by Chyna, was the sixth single from the album, but a new version was recorded for the single release, with the London Session Orchestra providing strings for a new backing track. This completely transformed the song, and when it was released, it became Carroll's biggest chart hit, reaching #3 and spending many weeks inside the Top 10.

Although the woman behind Dianna Carroll’s chart-topping hit Don’t be a Stranger...
I don't think Chyna Whyne ever released her version. Her version was more like the demo since she wrote the song. Here are something I have dig out:
Only said here that she co-wrote the song which was sung by Dianna Carroll.

This is the tracklist of her album Sexy Baal-ed:

And lastly, Chyna Whyne's blog in her own words (read the 4th paragraph)

...I could not find it in any shops in the west end, so decided to find it when I got home, it had to be somewhere.
{Why would she bother to find it in the shop if it was a demo?/Only released CD's can be found in the shop!}
I didn’t have to look too hard before I found the original recording with me singing it.
{She found her recording (first/original) before Dina's cover!

I'm not sure whether that's her "origginal" release. It has 14/16 tracks (that's not common back in the 90's!
For now, I also prefer Dina Carroll's version more. Perhaps someday we would have a chance to listen to the version sung by the composer of the song.

I don't see her name! Unless she's Coral Gordon!
Okay, she is!

Chyna Wine, whose real name is Coral Gordon, describes reggae music as 'life's worthy cause'.
This was my favorite Vivian Lai song off that album and I found out about Dina's version when I was watching the Brit awards that year Dine was nominated and won Best British female and they played a clip of that song during the show. Both songs are great Dina's is slightly better just for the fact that she's able to hit the super high note towards the end when Vivian had to go Falsetto on that note. I heard that at the time Vivian had a really hard time recording this song because it's so difficult to sing so she thought maybe she needed to take some singing lessons and she ran into Roman Law at some event and she brought this up with him so he told her to sing acapella for him and afte she sang juts one line he stopped her and said you are a great singer already you don't need lessons! hehe
Wow, Eddie, you got quite a story to share. Hehe.. you must be a big fan of Vivian Lai back then. :)
@Eddie, thank you for sharing that interesting story! I like Vivian Lai & also "stories behind" like this! You must have meant: Roman Tam/羅文

Since you have watched the Brit awards, I guess you're living in the UK! Have you ever heard the real original by Coral Gordon/Chyna Wine/Chyna Whyne/Chyna Gordon (she must having identity crisis ;P )?
